Liverpool could make a club record bid of £40 million for Real Madrid superstar Karim Benzema, according to The Metro.
The report has suggested that the Merseyside outfit, who are set to lose Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez to Barcelona for around £63m, have identified French international Benzema as his replacement.
The French international, despite playing a key role in Real Madrid's Champions League success last season, has still not signed a new deal with the Bernabeu outfit, and reports have indicated that the club could be willing to sell.
In fact, it appears that Carlo Ancelotti's side are looking into the possibility of bringing Colombian hitman Radamel Falcao to the club, meaning Benzema's time at the Bernabeu could be nearing its end.
It remains to be seen, however, as to whether he would be interested in a move to Anfield ahead of the 2014/15 campaign, but he would certainly prove a major coup for Brendan Rodgers and Co.
Can he replace Suarez?
With Suarez heading out of the exit door, it was never going to be an easy task for the Reds hierarchy to replace their star man. After all, Suarez's 31 Premier League goals played an instrumental role in the club's success of 2013/14.
Benzema, however, represents the type of marquee signing that Reds fans crave, and could well flourish in the Premier League. The French star, of course, is an extremely different player to Suarez, but with the likes of Rickie Lambert and Daniel Sturridge already at the club, the three of them could fire Liverpool into trophy contention next season.
If Liverpool are to secure the player's services, however, they may well have to compete with Arsenal, who have also been credited with interest in the Frenchman. The Gunners have been on the lookout for a striker for some time now, and will be desperate to improve in their forward line in this transfer window.
Gunners fans will certainly be excited by the prospect of Alexis Sanchez signing for the club, with the Barcelona ace expected to arrive in the near future. It remains to be seen as to whether the club step up in their pursuit of Benzema, however.
