Manchester United are still set to sell Sir Alex Ferguson’s flop signing Bebe this summer, despite the fact that he’s been included in the squad for the pre-season tour of the United States.
Yesterday speculation emerged that the Portuguese-born playmaker might be given one last chance to prove himself at Old Trafford, with new boss Louis van Gaal opting to include him in his plans for the build up the new campaign. However Portuguese publication A Bola insists that the 23-year-old is being reserved for a sale to Benfica, and that a deal will go ahead sooner rather than later.
There’s no doubt there would be virtually no resistance from the stands were Bebe to finally leave United for good, as he’s generally regarded as one of the worst purchases Sir Alex ever made. Despite having impressed Carlos Queiroz enough for the former United coach to convince Ferguson to buy him, it became apparent soon after his arrival that he wasn’t up to the standard of the Premier League, and he’s since been shipped out numerous times on loan.
Though his latest spell away from the club - a loan move to Pacos de Ferreira last term - wasn’t an unqualified disaster, it would be hugely surprising for Van Gaal to keep him onboard past the summer, and if Benfica are indeed interested in taking him on then the Red Devils will certainly be ready to consent to a swift departure.
Clearing the deadwood
Much has been made over the presence of a host of players currently on the books at United who perhaps shouldn’t be. One of Van Gaal’s first jobs in change at the former Premier League champions will be to determine who he deems capable of representing the club moving forward, and then holding a clearance sale for those that don’t meet the requirements.
The likes of Nani, Ashley Young, Anderson and Tom Cleverley all find themselves on the frequently-appearing list of names linked with exits in the coming weeks, and in truth there’s plenty of others - think Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck - who have cause for concern over their United futures.
Though none of them fall into quite the same bracket as Bebe there’s reason to believe any number may be shipped as Van Gaal looks to revamp his squad, and it’s safe to assume once more that fans wouldn’t be too sad to see them leave.
Naturally as players leave United will be scouring the transfer market in a bid to find upgrades. Arturo Vidal and Angel di Maria find themselves continually named in connection with moves that would see them link up with Van Gaal, whilst Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen could yet be bought in to bolster the defence.
