The Chicago Bulls have all but given up hope on their campaign to reel in one of the top free agents on the market in Carmelo Anthony, and have shifted their sites to another veteran playmaker.
When the news came out that Anthony was suspected to re-sign with the New York Knicks, the Bulls realized that they should probably target some of the remaining free agents on the market. Fortunately for the Bulls, there is still a plethora of proven talent available in free agency. The Bulls have reportedly stepped up as legitimate suitors for Pau Gasol, and are looking to add him to their roster for next season.
Gasol to the Bulls?
Pau had a solid year last year, and still has plenty of effective years left in his NBA career as he is only 34 years of age. He would be an excellent boost to the defensively-talented Bulls squad that has been tracking down any and every available player that can put up consistent numbers.
Gasol would compliment Rose's style of play, and fill the void in the Bulls team that was created after they recently amnestied Carlos Boozer. Gasol would be a serious upgrade at the position, and would likely play very well alongside Joakim Noah, who is one of the league's most talented passing centers.
Gasol is also being pursued by the Spurs, Heat, and Thunder, with the Spurs expected to boast the most competitive argument. The Bulls, however, have an excess of cap space in the event that Anthony signs with the Knicks, and would be able to offer an enticing deal to Gasol.
While there are also many other talented free agents that remain unsigned, Gasol is one of the most proven players. He will have to make a decision soon about which team to sign with, and judging from the teams that are courting him, he would like to join a team with a promising roster that can win a championship.
Best choice in Chicago
The Bulls can offer just that, a young team loaded with talent and in a good position to make a deep playoff run. The only potential roadblocks to the Finals would be the Heat, Pacers, and possibly Wizards.
The only remaining question for the Bulls is whether or not they can capture just one more starting player that can add consistent scoring and add the final piece of the puzzle. If the Bulls end up with Pau Gasol, they have a good chance of winning the Eastern Conference.
