Real Madrid are considering a shock move for Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, according to The Daily Star.
The report has suggested that the Bernabeu outfit are interested in bringing the England international to Spain, with the United man recognised as a perfect back-up option in attack.
This transfer link will certainly come as a surprise to many, considering Real Madrid have the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. in their front line. However, seemingly, Carlo Ancelotti has identified the United man as the player he wants to replace Alvaro Morata, who looks set to join Italian giants Juventus.
Welbeck may well have impressed Real chiefs when United played the La Liga giants in the Champions League back in 2013. Welbeck in fact gave the Red Devils the lead in the Bernabeu before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised against his former club.
It remains to be seen, however, as to whether Madrid step up their interest in the United man, but it's certainly a fascinating transfer link.
Welbeck at United
Danny Welbeck has seemingly grown frustrated with the lack of opportunities in United's attack in recent time. With Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Co. in front of him at the Theatre of Dreams, he's often found himself on the bench or shipped off out wide.
If he was to sign for Real, then, it appears the club would be willing to play him in attack if he can break through into the first team. It's uncertain as to whether new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal wants to keep Welbeck at Old Trafford for the 2014/15 campaign, but it appears that the club could be ready to let him leave.
That's because it has been suggested that United would only be willing to let him depart if they can sign a suitable replacement. Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping the club can sign another couple of star names this summer, and it appears that a striker could now be on Van Gaal's shopping list.
Fans of the Red Devils will, however, be hoping to see more of starlet James Wilson, who shined under Ryan Giggs at the end of last season. Wilson and Mexican ace Javier Hernandez will be desperate to play a key role under the new regime at Old Trafford.
