Petr Cech is set to be offered the opportunity to become Chelsea vice-captain as part of a ploy from Jose Mourinho to ensure the experienced goalkeeper remains at the club, according to recent reports.
32-year-old Cech's future at Stamford Bridge has been subject to doubt for several weeks now, with Mourinho expected to install Belgian international starlet Thibaut Courtois as Chelsea's new first-choice 'stopper next season following his return from an immensely successful loan spell with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.
Cech has been linked with wealthy French duo Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain as well as the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent weeks but, according to Metro, Mourinho plans to offer him the opportunity to back-up current skipper John Terry in a bid to stop him from leaving.
The excellent form displayed by Courtois during his three seasons at the Vicente Calderon have created somewhat of an obvious headache for Mourinho as he plots Chelsea's return to title success.
While Cech has been an extremely reliable first-team performer for Chelsea since arriving in England from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes in 2004 and could potentially still have many years at the elite level in his illustrious career left to play, Mourinho would surely never be forgiven by supporters if he allowed a world-class talent such as Courtois - who will not be content with a place on the substitute's bench - to leave the club.

Will the offer be enough?
Whether such an offer to replace the recently departed figure of Frank Lampard as Chelsea's vice-captain will be enough to convince Cech to stay put remains to be seen.
However, with Terry - who recently signed a one-year extension to his own contract at the club - perhaps set to follow in Lampard's footsteps next summer, the potential for Cech to take over as club captain could presumably be very tempting indeed.
As well as wanting Cech to remain to fight for his place, Mourinho will also be presumably hoping that he can serve as a role model to Courtois and use his significant experience to aid his rival's development.
