Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala could sign for Manchester United or Chelsea this summer, having seen his proposed move to Premier League champions Manchester City stall.
This has been reported by The Daily Star, who have suggested that the Frenchman has yet to decide on his future, but favours a move to West London in this transfer window.
Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is seemingly desperate to add to his back-line ahead of the 2014/15 campaign, with Fernando and Willy Caballero the Citizens' only signings of the summer so far.
However, up to now, they've failed to add to their defence, despite looking extremely vulnerable at the back at times last term. Martin Demecheils was signed by the City boss last summer, however he put in a number of inconsistent displays.
And now, with reports indicating that their move for Mangala has stalled, it appears that their rivals could pounce.
Much like City, rivals Manchester United are also determined to add to their defensive lines ahead of the new season. It appears that new United boss Louis van Gaal is set to step up his search for defensive recruitments in the imminent future, and it remains to be seen as to whether the Dutchman makes a move for the Porto man.
The Red Devils lost experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the end of last season, so fans will be hoping the club press ahead with a move for Mangala. The Frenchman is rated at £32 million, meaning he won't come cheap for the new regime at Old Trafford.
Mangala will have to battle with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans for a place in the first-team if he ends up at Old Trafford before the start of the new campaign.
If United are to sign the highly rated 23-year-old, however, they may well have to persuade him to turn down a move to Chelsea. It appears that the defender favours a move to the Bridge, despite the club already having the likes of John Terry and Gary Cahill on their books.
With Kurt Zouma already signed, perhaps Mourinho could bring in Mangala to further improve his long term options at the club. The battle to sign the Frenchman may well drag on for some time over the course of the summer.
