Egyptian club Al Ahly have revealed that Ahmed Fathi will undergo a trial period at Premier League giants Arsenal, reports The Daily Mail.
Fathi, who is a centre-back by trade, previously spent six months in England on loan at Hull City when they were in the Championship. A move to Arsenal, however, would represent a major step up in the player's career.
Fathi's trail at Arsenal was in fact told on Facebook, as his club revealed that he would be missing their up coming fixture because of the trial with the Gunners.
On the club's Facebook page, they announced: "Ahmed Fathi is set to travel to England on Friday to undergo a trial period at Arsenal Football Club in preparation to sign him if he has a successful trial, and so Fathi will be unavailable to participate in Al Ahly's game against Smouha in the semi-final of the Egypt Cup next Monday."
It remains to be seen as to whether Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hands the 29-year-old a deal at the Emirates this summer, but he could boost their options in the back-line ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.
Pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were key to Arsenal's success last term, as the club finally ended their trophy drought with FA Cup glory. Club captain Thomas Vermaelen, however, struggled for opportunities at the north London outfit, and has consequently been linked with a move away from the club in recent time.
If Fathi is to complete a transfer to Arsenal in the near future, then it's unlikely that he would be a first-team regular, however may prove a back-up option to Mertesacker and Co.
Gunners fans may not be overly excited by the prospect of landing Fathi, but they will be overjoyed by the club's recent purchase of Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean forward, who starred in this summer's World Cup, completed his move to England yesterday, and looks set to play a starring role in England's elite division next term.
Fans of the Emirates outfit will be hoping the club make at least a couple more major signings before the start of the 2014/15 campaign, with a right-back and midfielder needed. It could, however, be Fathi that is the first name to follow Sanchez to the club in this transfer window.
