The Chicago Blackhawks new that the first order of business in the NHL off season was to do whatever it took to keep their star forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

Big Money

There was no fear or concern from either side in the discussion it was just a matter of price and length in this deal. And on Wednesday the two sides reached an agreement. Chicago Blackhawk fans can sit back and enjoy watching Toews and Kane carry the Blackhawks for another eight seasons. The two forwards signed eight year, 84M contracts which will cost the organization 10.5M per season.

I knew these guys were going to resign, but I had no idea it was going to be this big of a deal. This easily is the most expensive off season signing to date, nothing else comes close. However, Toews and Kane have proven in the past that they can deliver when required.

Points Party

This season was no different. Kane and Toews accumulated a combined total of 137 points and narrowing missed getting into another Stanley Cup final series this past year. Captain Toews has also helped lead team Canada to two gold medal victories as well. Toews has clearly been the more defensive minded of the two forwards.

He’s worn the C for the Blackhawks since age 20 and has shown tremendous resolve under pressure in every game he’s played. He’s one of the best two way forwards in the game in my opinion.

Kane is not as defensive minded as Toews and has preferred instead to use his explosive speed to beat his opponents. Also, I believe Kane throw’s his weight around a lot more than Toews. These two styles of play have been quite successful for these players and the entire Blackhawks team.

Both these guys have managed to accumulate more than 20 points since 2010. I believe the top of line of Kane, Toews and Sharp is one of the best offensive lines in the league ever. And I believe they can only improve moving forward.

Risky Business

Some may say that offering such disgustingly expensive contracts is too risky and in reality shouldn’t be allowed. And I would have to agree, but the contracts are signed now. And with their signatures, Kane and Toews have secured the franchise’s biggest contracts ever. I can’t wait to see how many more Stanley Cups these two guys will win together.

It will be interesting to see what happens to veteran forward Marian Hossa as a result of these historical signings. My guess is he’ll be on the move. I can’t wait to see what GM Stan Bowman has planned for his team throughout the rest of the off season.
