The Bayern Munich forward has been one of the Netherlands standout performers at the World Cup, prompting speculation that the new Red Devils boss would try to persuade him to move to Old Trafford.

Van Gaal confirmed in an interview with Dutch TV after leading his country to a third place play-off victory over Brazil that there would always be a place for Robben in his Manchester United side, but it remained unclear how serious he was about bringing him back to the Premier League.

However, his audacious attempt proved to be fruitless, despite the 31-year-old admitting that he has a special bond with the manager - who he credits as the most important coach in his career.

So, unfortunately for Manchester United fans, Robben will be staying at the Allianz Arena - but that doesn't mean the club won't make another headline signing before the close of the transfer window.
