Chelsea could step up their interest in Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane after sounding out the possibility of bringing him to Stamford Bridge, reports The Daily Star.
The report has suggested that the youngster, who previously starred under Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu, has grown increasingly frustrated at the club because of a lack of opportunities in recent time.
And now it appears that the French youngster could run out of patience at the Spanish giants, amid interest from Chelsea. It won't, however, be plane sailing for the Blues boss to land the youngster, as Real boss Carlo Ancelotti doesn't want to sell the starlet, despite the player being behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the pecking order at the club.
In the 2012/13 season - with Mourinho in charge - Varane played a key role for the club, and could now be reunited with his former manager in England's elite division. The youngster would seemingly replace David Luiz at Stamford Bridge, after the flamboyant Brazilian completed a mega money move to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
If Mourinho was to land the Frenchman, then the player would have to compete for places with a number of top stars at the Bridge. The Blues already have the likes of Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma on their books, whilst John Terry is still captaining the side.
Varane and Zouma would certainly be looked upon as the future of the club, and could prove to be an exciting future defensive partnership. It remains to be seen, however, as to whether the 'Special One' steps up his interest in the highly rated star in the near future.
The Blues boss has already been extremely busy in this summer transfer window, having already secured the signing of Cesc Fabregas. His international teammate Diego Costa also looks set to join Mourinho's new look side in the near future.
Along with Varane, Atletico Madrid full-back Filipe Luis has also been tipped to make a move to the Bridge. Ashley Cole departed the club at the end of last season, meaning right-back Cesar Azpilicueta is the only real first team star who could take up the left-back role next term.
