The Anaheim Ducks continued to strengthen their lineup and fill their somewhat depleted roster. The organization signed free agent veteran Dany Heatley to a one year, $1m contract on Wednesday.
Heatley was the odd man out after the Minnesota Wild signed free agent forward Thomas Vanek . This move was most likely made in order to clear up cap space so the Wild can pursue resigning forward Nino Niederreiter as well.
So the 33-year-old Heatley will look to continue his career with the Ducks and hopes to improve on last season’s numbers. Heatley accumulated a total of 28 points for the Wild this past season. He tallied just six points in his team’s playoff campaign.
But this was an excellent signing by the Anaheim Ducks. It’s by no means expensive and Heatley brings a lot of experience to the team. The Ducks have lost some key veteran players this year with the retirement of Teemu Selanne and the departure of Saku Koivu. Heatley will certainly be an excellent leader in the dressing room for his new team.
He’s lost some speed over the years, but still has plenty to offer. This guy’s got exceptional puck handling skills, a wicked wrist shot and is the perfect fit for any second powerplay unit. I believe he’ll be alternating between the second and third offensive lines this season. The Ducks will certainly benefit from having him on the powerplay units as well. I believe it won’t take long for Dany Heatley to fit in with his new team or Anaheim’s style of play. He gets to play with Ryan Getzlaf again who he’s played with at the international level. The way I see it this is a perfect scenario for Heatley in Anaheim.
I believe Heatley has the perfect opportunity to score 30 goals or more for the Ducks this year. Head coach Bruce Boudreau is well known for experimenting and shaking up his lineups. I’m sure he’ll have Dany Heatley testing each line throughout the season this year.
I’d love to see him play with Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf, but I don’t think that’ll happen too often. Regardless, this is a heck of a deal for both sides and I can’t wait to see how long it will take for Heatley to score a goal. I believe the Anaheim Ducks will be one of the teams fighting for top spot in the Western Conference this year.
