Real Madrid are ready to include Pepe as part of the package to lure James Rodriguez to the Santiago Bernabeu instead of Old Trafford, according to foreign sources.
Reports earlier on today made it clear that Los Blancos were in talks with Monaco over the purchase of the Colombian, having been assured of his ability to improve their squad thanks to his performances in this summer’s World Cup. That being said Madrid are unwilling to meet their French counterparts’ ridiculous demands in terms of the fee expected for Rodriguez’s services - thought to be between €85million and €115million - and so now want to include a player of their own to lower the cost, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, citing French publication L'Equipe.
Interest in Rodriguez
It’s no surprise that the 23-year-old has garnered an incredible amount of attention from big clubs given the fact that he won the World Cup Golden Boot award whilst essentially playing in midfield. There were a good many calls for him to be awarded the Golden Ball award for best player of the tournament too and, despite the fact that the accolade went to Lionel Messi, the likes of United and Madrid remain convinced over his potential to improve their respective squads.

It’s been suggested by Spanish sources that the rising star sees a move to Madrid as one which would allow him to realise his long-term dreams as a professional footballer. Coming off the back of their famous Champions League victory Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s stock is at an all time high and, with their routinely flexed financial muscle, one would assume they would be willing to offer Rodriguez astronomical wages to put to bed any lingering doubts he may have over making the move.
What’s more, it would appear that Madrid reciprocate Rodriguez’s aforementioned desire to make this particular move work, as Florentino Perez looks to once again make headlines by signing the most in-form player on the planet. As was proven with the transfer saga surrounding Gareth Bale what the Bernabeu boss wants, he more often than not gets.
Of course if Madrid do offer Pepe and are successful in swaying the minds of Monaco chiefs in their favour, it will come as a blow to United and new boss Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils have been hotly linked with Rodriguez in the past few weeks and, with the club desperate to reinstate themselves as a major European force, are currently willing to pay big to get their man.
