Arsenal striker target Karim Benzema will urge Chelsea target Raphael Varane to turn his back on a move away from the club and stay with Real Madrid this summer.
The French international’s stock continues to rise on the world stage, after a number of impressive performances for his country in Brazil this summer. And, reports in The Daily Star today claim he would cost in excess of £20million.
Varane is a favourite of Blues boss Jose Mourinho, and it was ‘the special one’ who initially brought the 21-year-old to the Spanish capital during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is again being linked with a move for the centre back.
Having made just 12 starts for Madrid last season, it’s no surprise that the player wants clarification on his future with Los Blancos. Whilst he was injured for large parts of the campaign, manager Carlo Ancelotti often favoured Pepe and Sergio Ramos at the heart of defence.
The Daily Mail claims Varane is unhappy at the lack of playing time, and is seeking clarification over his future as Premier League clubs lurk. Ancelotti is set to inform the player that he is a big part of his plans moving forward, however.
And, reports in Marca claim that international teammate Benzema will tell his compatriot to remain at the club rather than look for opportunities elsewhere. If that is the case, then it’s unlikely the striker will be going anywhere this summer either.
The 26-year-old striker has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger mentioned alongside the player year-after-year. However, he appeared to dash the hopes of the Emirates Stadium outfit earlier in the month when reports claimed he was set to sign a new long-term contract with Madrid.
Whilst such a deal is yet to be confirmed, it looks like bad news for the Gunners, who have already strengthened in the transfer window. Alexis Sanchez arrived in north London from Barcelona, whilst Joel Campbell will return following his loan in Greece.
Even if Benzema doesn’t join Arsenal in the transfer window, he appears to have done the club a favour with his ‘advice’ for Varane, and it will be a benefit to every title challenger if the Frenchman doesn’t arrive in west London.
As for Chelsea, they do need a new centre back after selling David Luiz to PSG. Varane would be the ideal replacement, with more than a decade ahead of him and experienced Premier League hands like John Terry and Gary Cahill available to play beside him.
The signs currently don’t look good for the Blues to bring the player to Stamford Bridge, but Mourinho would be wise to push the boat out in an effort to sign this hugely talented individual.
