Vince McMahon is trying to scale back spending in the WWE. That is no secret. In recent times he has fired numerous members of the roster, as well as several back room staff in a bid to stave of tough financial times.
And now it looks like his attempts at frugality could have riled some of the current crop of WWE superstars.
As reported by Sportsworldnews.com, a number of the wrestlers are unhappy with the WWE in relation to what they perceive as issues with their payment.
The controversy is believed to center around royalty checks, or lack of, and with McMahon making no secret of his desire to limit spending in recent months it is no surprise that those who make the money for the business would be unhappy with any measures that seek to limit their own profit.
Virtually ever since the WWE launched their own network earlier this year, there have been signs that the organization is in the midst of an economic slump.
Having witnessed WWE stock plummet in the aftermath, leading to McMahon losing an incredible $350 million of his own personal wealth in one day in May, the boss has overseen a number of cutbacks.
This has included removing 10 fringe stars from the payroll including Brodus Clay and Evan Bourne, as well as attempting to remove Diva, Emma, after her recent arrest only to back track in fear of setting an unwanted precedent.
The news that those who remain on the books in the WWE are beginning to become restless with the current situation will be worrying to McMahon and the WWE hierarchy, and whilst no specific names have come out as of yet, it adds to a worrying undercurrent currently permeating around the business.
Reports suggest that current WWE superstars are being fined for the littlest of things - including dressing inappropriately away from the ring. And McMahon, having expressed a desire to cut as much as $20 million from the WWE budget before the year is out, is certainly pushing his stars to the limit as he seeks to recoup significant losses.
It is likely that until the losses can be brought under control the money paid out to WWE superstars will remain highly scrutinized by the organization. As such they are facing alienating some big names.
In the wake of the recent CM Punk dispute which is yet to be resolved, that is hardly the ideal situation for Vince McMahon even if the product currently behind put out in the ring continues to gain fans.
