The Buffalo Sabres are coming off another abysmal season. The team finished last in the Eastern Conference and has been stuck near the bottom of the standings for quite a few years now.
The departure of Thomas Vanek and now goalie Ryan Miller marks the beginning of this team’s rebuilding phase. They have made some positive moves in the past few weeks. The organization has successfully re-signed forward Matt Moulson and has picked up some key players in Brian Gionta and Josh Gorges.
Andrej Meszaros was also picked up to help fill the opening in the roster after defensemen Christian Ehrhoff was dropped by the team. These are all excellent signings by the organization and will serve as a good starting point to getting the team back on track.
The Sabres received a huge boost, sealing a deal with rookie sensation Sam Reinhart as well. Reinhart was signed to a three year entry level deal with the team on Saturday. Reinhart is coming off an explosive season with Kootenay in the WHL.
The 18 year old accumulated an astonishing total of 108 points last season and took home two awards as well. The Kootenay’s Captain won the Player of the Year award and Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year as well. This signing will hopefully re-ignite some excitement within this Buffalo Sabres team and give the fans something to cheer about.
Reinhart is joining a roster filled with lots of younger inexperienced players. Reinhart has no NHL experience, but his ability to score goals basically means he’ll be getting a lot of ice time throughout his entry level deal.
I believe he’ll have very few problems adjusting to the level of play in the NHL. He’s already experienced being a Captain and has dealt really well with the pressures and responsibility that comes with that.
I believe he’ll be placed on the second line. He’ll also be looked to contribute substantially on the team’s powerplay units as well. Now if the team can just sign a few more veteran players like Saku Koivu, they’ll be well on their way to advancing further up the standings this season.
This team is quite a ways away from challenging for a playoff spot. But if players like Cody Hodgson can repeat this past 44 point season, and Reinhart has a breakout rookie year, this team certainly won’t be in last place.
I can’t wait to see how long it will take for Reinhart to start accumulating points for his first NHL team. Things are looking very promising for this young man moving forward and I’m sure the Sabres are delighted to have this kid on their team.
