Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has grown frustrated over protracted talks for Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony and are considering turning their attention to a £16m deal Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette. That is according to the Daily Star, who cite reports in France that Lacazette has snubbed Lyon's offer of a new contract and would jump at the chance to try his luck in the Premier League.
Brendan means business
Rodgers has certainly wasted no time in strengthening his squad and compensating for the departure of star striker Luis Suarez, moving quickly to snap up Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Rickie Lambert early this summer.
Liverpool are expected to complete their fourth summer signing later today as Lazar Markovic undergoes a medical ahead of his £20m switch from Benfica, a deal which will take summer spending at Anfield past the £60m mark.
With Suarez sold to Barcelona for roughly £75m there is still plenty of cash in the coffers for Rodgers to reinvest though, which has prompted the Reds boss to keep a close check on Lacazette.
The 23-year-old would not be a direct replacement for Suarez but ticks all the boxes of a Rodgers signing, possessing a potent mix of pace, skill and a cool head in the final third in terms of decision making.
Lacazette scored 23 goals for Lyon last season in all competitions and emerged as the star man in a very young team, while also proving equally adept either as a central striker or more versatile wide option.
Rodgers is looking for capable goalscorers to take the burden off Daniel Sturridge next season and Lacazette fits the bill, but there is plenty of competition for a French international possessing genuine potential to play at the very highest level.
Premier League love-in
For a start Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of the right-footed forward, who has two years left on his current Lyon contract and continues to sub the opportunity to hold talks over fresh terms.
Wenger has maintained a watching brief though and is likely to wait for Lacazette's contract to run down further in the hope of launching a cut-price offer next summer, but Newcastle United are also very interested and considering a formal offer for another Ligue 1 star this summer.
Liverpool can offer Champions League football though and are heavy favourites to get this deal done if Lyon do indeed decide to cash in on their prized asset, who is thought to be available for £16m this summer.
