Feyenoord sporting director Martin van Geel has revealed that the club could sell defender Stefan de Vrij this summer, amid interest from Manchester United.

As reported by, Van Geel has insisted that De Vrij, who runs out of contract at the Dutch club at the end of next season, could be sold in this transfer window if his club receive the right offer.

Right offer

It's not yet known as to how much money the Dutch outfit will hope to secure in order to sell the defender, but he may well be heading out of the club in the near future.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Van Geel said: "Stefan is a player who came through our youth academy and played in the first team for five years.

"He played an amazing World Cup and his contract is due to expire in one year.

"If the right club comes along and puts in a good offer, we will definitely look at it."

World Cup

De Vrij certainly made a name for himself in this summer's World Cup, as the Dutch secured a third place finish in Brazil. He was one of the outstanding young players in the tournament, so it's no surprise that Van Gaal has been credited with interest in his signature, having worked with him in recent time.

Despite being just 22-years-old, De Vrij has already been handed 19 caps for the Dutch, and looks set for a bright future in the game. It remains to be seen as to whether Manchester United step up their interest in the highly rated defender in the near future, but he will certainly prove a major coup for the new Red Devils boss.

Manchester United

Manchester United are certainly in need of defensive additions ahead of the 2014/15 season. Experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have already the club, whilst Alex Buttner, who struggled for opportunities last term, has been offloaded to Russian club Dynamo Moscow.

There is also uncertainty over Frenchman Patrice Evra, meaning United currently have a very inexperienced back-line. The Red Devils have already completed the signing of England teenage Luke Shaw from Southampton, but are looking vulnerable in the centre-half positions.

The likes of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling represent Van Gaal's most recognised defenders at the club, but all three have failed to hold down a first-team spot over the past year or so.

It certainly looks set to be a busy summer at Manchester United, and De Vrij could be the first Dutch ace to follow Van Gaal to the Theatre of Dreams.
