Manchester United have beaten off competition from their Premier League rivals such as Chelsea and Liverpool to take Portuguese youngsters Joao Filipe and Joao Virginia on trail from Benfica.

The pair were seen being escorted into the club's Carrington training ground earlier today, with coaches set to run the rule over them before making a decision over their future.

New Cristiano Ronaldo

Filipe is particularly highly-rated and has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo back in his home country. Virginia, a goalkeeper, is also held up as a bright prospect in Portugal.

The pair have been attracting some serious interest from all over Europe in recent weeks, but it appears as though Premier League clubs more most keen to take them on. Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all wanted to take them on trial, but it seems as though Manchester United have beaten them to the punch.

European interest

On the content both Barcelona and Real Madrid are said to have been keen to take a look at the pair as well, but it is Manchester United who have had the last laugh.

The Daily Mail say that Benfica are hoping to offer the two long-term deals to ensure they remain in Portugal, however given the level of competition they face that may prove to be difficult.

Youth system

The likes of Danny Welbeck, Jonny Evans and Adnan Januzaj have all come through the Manchester United youth system in recent seasons to play for the first team, and they'll no doubt have high hopes of the Portuguese pair doing the same if they can persuade them to move.

Chelsea and Liverpool chance

There is of course still a chance that the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea could strike a deal with Benfica if their trial at Manchester United doesn't go well.

New boss Louis van Gaal will undoubtedly be delighted at the capture of the pair, but will have his mind on more pressing matters this summer. The Dutchman is on his way to Old Trafford  ahead in the middle of a busy transfer window, with plenty of business still to be done.

Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera have already signed on the dotted line and Juventus ace Arturo Vidal is being tipped to follow suit.  The Red Devils are also in the hunt for Angel di Maria from Real Madrid, while Borussia Dortmund pair Mats Hummels and Marco Reus are also on their radar.
