Floyd Mayweather Jr. was busy today hyping his upcoming fight with Marcos Maidana in Washinton D.C., but the one story set to grab the headlines involves a fighter in a different field.
Asked about star female UFC fighter Ronda Rousey, Mayweather made the astonishing claim that he had no idea who that was, going as far as to try and claim he thought the person he was being asked about was a male:
"I don't even know who he is," said the boxing champ.
Considering Rousey's superstar status in the fighting world, and the fact that there have been comments in the press recently regarding a hypothetical fight between the two it is hard to believe that the mega-rich Mayweather had literally no idea who Rousey is.
But the move is typical of Mayweather who seems to know exactly how to rile his critics, a man who has the unique ability to seek out controversy where there seems to be done.
Rousey vs Mayweather
The question posed to Mayweather on Tuesday came after UFC President Dana White had come out backing Rousey to beat Mayweather should the two combative stars ever end up in a MMA ring, or in a street fight:
"Ronda wins that fight and hurts him badly," said the UFC chief back in May.
For her part, Rousey has spoken of the crazy scenario, and in her typically jovial manner explained that she already has her tactics worked out if she came up against Mayweather:
“I would drop down to the ground and crawl over to him as fast as I can,” Rousey said.
“I wouldn’t even stand up, I wouldn’t be near him. I would just do a little army crawl over there… I would just be skittering after him like the one dude in Bloodsport that was doing the whole monkey crawl fight system," she told a radio station in March of this year.
Mayweather courts controversy
As mentioned previously the latest remarks to come from Mayweather do little to detract from his status as one of the most controversial, outspoken boxers ever to step into a ring.
Holding a perfect 46-0 record to date Mayweather is just as capable with his mouth as he is with his hands. Although his actions have got him into a few embarrassing situations in the past.
From being called out by Larry Merchant to criticizing people who give money to charity, there are numerous incidents in his illustrious career in which Mayweather has stepped over the line in a sport which demands an arrogance bereft of most people.
Mayweather's latest remarks towards Ronda Rousey serve as another example, and at to a growing list who would be backing the UFC star should that hypothetical fight ever materialize.
