With the decision for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Golden Ball being awarded to Lionel Messi, people are questioning wether the decision was the right one or not?
Now nobody is questioning the sheer brilliance of the Argentina and Barcelona attacker, but was he really at his best? Let alone the best player of the tournament. Messi has been reported at being below par for the past season with Barcelona. While still being in an almost untouchable category reserved for the very best, he hasn't quite hit the heights of past seasons.
World Cup effect
During the World Cup he floated in and out of games, often struggling to keep himself afloat amongst the pressure of being the forefront of the Argentina attack and the presence of the Brazilian mixed crowd, while still creating little moments of magic and almost singly handedly dragging his team into the knockout stages.
Player of the tournament?
With this in mind the question remains wether or not the amazing talent that is Messi actually deserved the award for player of the tournament. With players such as Arjen Robben, James Rodriguez, Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez all contributing heavily towards not just their team but the competition's overall entertainment value, does it really make sense to give the Golden Ball to the Barca star?
Yes he is an amazing footballer with unimaginable skill and talent but has himself said he does not care about winning this award, which could be easily seen on the players face having come so close to leading his team to World Cup glory.
Messi was not the only person to doubt the player winning with Sepp Blatter expressing his surprise, and Diego Maradona claiming it was unfair and that the award should have given to Colombia attacker Rodriguez, who scored six goals in five games, winning the Golden Boot and scoring arguably one of the best goals of the tournament.
With everything in mind did the panel in charge of the decision award it to the best player of the 2014 World Cup, or did they give it to who they wanted to be the best player?
