I’m not for a second suggesting that footballers need to be holier than thou and live their lives in a saintly fashion, but if an athlete truly wants to get to the very top of their chosen field of sport, then he really needs to take care of himself. We only have one body, one set of lungs, one liver. We need to cherish them and look after them.
Jack Wilshere doesn’t seem to appreciate this fact. He has been photographed enjoying a cigarette and drink whilst at a pool party in Las Vegas . Before people start bashing me and my views, I am well aware of the fact that there are, have been and always will be footballers who smoke and drink.
I am not saying Wilshere can’t do these things, I am merely saying that he shouldn’t do them if he really wants to get to the top.
Wilshere burst onto the scene a few years back and was tipped by many to be a real star of the future for both club and country. Since then, mainly through injury, Wilshere’s career has stalled slightly.
He hasn’t kicked on as much as England and Arsenal fans would have liked.
Focus on improving
Wilshere always strikes me as being the sort of person who puts image and status ahead of hard work and dedication. At this point in his career he needs to be staking a claim to replace Steve Gerrard in the England side.
Rather than living the party lifestyle in Las Vegas, he should be working hard on his fitness and preparing for the coming season.
I fully appreciate that footballers need a holiday after long, gruelling seasons, but Wilshere was injured for large parts of the season and hasn’t exactly been busy over the last few weeks in Brazil.
I’m glad I am not the only person who thinks Wilshere needs to sort himself out. Former Arsenal manager George Graham was on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show this morning and said: “Arsene Wenger is the right man to deal with it. He wants a person to not only train well and eat well, but behave well.
"Somebody has got to have a word with him and I think Arsene Wenger will do. His career has not gone anywhere in the last 18 months. The papers now want any sort of publicity of players misbehaving and he has got to get his act together.
"Arsene Wenger has to have a word with Jack and tell him the responsibility he has now got. They were talking about him being a future Arsenal captain and a captain shouldn't be acting like that."
