Robin van Persie snapped with Thomas Vermaelen on holiday

Manchester United star Robin van Persie has been snapped on holiday with Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, reports The Express

The report has suggested that the duo, who both starred at this summer's World Cup, have been enjoying the sun with each other and their families in Barbados. Both players of course are former Arsenal teammates, and must have built up quite the relationship with each other at the Emirates.

World Cup

Both stars, however, had very different World Cups, as Thomas Vermaelen struggled with injury throughout Belgium's campaign. The Red Devils were eventually knocked out in the quarter-final of the competition against eventual finalists Argentina.

Van Persie, on the other hand, played a starring role in the tournament, as the Dutch were knocked out in the semi-final stage. His side did, however, beat Brazil in their final game of the tournament to secure a third place World Cup finish.

Transfer link

With the summer transfer window now in full force, Gunners captain Vermaelen has been linked with a move to Manchester United, which would ultimately reunite him with Van Persie.

It's not known as to whether Van Persie and Vermaelen have discussed the possibility of the Belgian joining the Old Trafford outfit, but the friendship of the duo may well have some part to play in any possible move.

Vermaelen's potential move to Manchester United certainly makes sense, as the Belgian star has struggled for opportunities in north London in recent time. Having been dislodged by the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in Arsenal's back-line, the player could now be handed a starring role at United.

Van Gaal is certainly in desperate need of improving his defence, after the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic departed the club at the end of the 2013/14 season. United are now considerably short of options in their back-line, with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling United's only real first-team centre-backs.

Manchester United fans will be hoping that the club can sign someone with the experience and calibre of Vermaelen, but it remains to be seen as to whether Van Gaal will step up his interest in the Arsenal man anytime soon.
