Manchester United have failed in an audacious attempt to steal Yaya Toure away from arch-rivals Manchester City in a £40 million deal, reports the Daily Star
Toure is still considering his options after growing disillusioned with life at the Etihad. The Ivory Coast international has fallen out with Manchester City chiefs after an alleged misunderstanding over his birthday celebrations.
However, although Toure is ready to quit Manchester City should the right offer come along, he is not prepared to abandon the Premier League winners in favour of a switch to Old Trafford. That fact became apparent after he rejected interest from Louis van Gaal.
United wanted a marquee signing this summer to prove they are still able to attract the best in the world. Following Toure's fallout with the club, officials saw it as an excellent chance to complete a major transfer coup.
£40 million offer
Manchester United representatives told Toure that they were willing to spend up to £40 million on him. Such a fee would have been tempting for Manchester City, who know the 31-year-old's value is likely to plummet as he grows further into his 30s.
But Toure told Manchester United that he had no interest in joining City's neighbours. Instead Toure is waiting for Ligue 1 giants PSG to make a move. Not only can the Parc des Princes offer Champions League football, but they would also be able to match Toure's astronomical wages.
Not only would a move to Manchester United cause upheaval in the streets of Manchester, it would also, arguably, be a step down for Toure. The Red Devils have no European football on offer and are firm outsiders to reclaim the Premier League title they have won 13 times.
Van Gaal setback
The snub could have been expected but will still come as blow to new Manchester United boss Van Gaal, who has cited the midfield as one of the key areas that need strengthening. Manchester United have since focused on other targets with Juventus star Arturo Vidal in their sights.
The details around Toure's discontent has already been widely reported by still inspires disbelief amongst football. First his agent, Dimitri Seluk, claimed Manchester City owners ignored him on his birthday before Toure claimed officials refused him time off to see his sick brother Ibrahim before he died.
Manchester City are keen to keep Toure at the club. He scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season and assisted nine, making him the most effective midfielder in the entire league.
