Chelsea have been handed a boost in their efforts to sign Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane, as reported by the Daily Star.

The 21-year old Frenchman has dropped a big hint that he could be leaving Madrid this summer for Chelsea, as he is unsettled there, according to reports in Spain.

Varane, who featured in every game in this summer’s World Cup for France, helped his side to the quarter-finals and narrowly missed out on a place in the semi’s to eventual winners of the tournament Germany.

A cause for an exit?

Getting so much first team football for his national side, the young talent will have wanted to emulate that with club side Madrid. Unfortunately however, Varane has to fight a losing battle for his place in the team under Carlo Ancelotti, with Pepe and Sergio Ramos first choice for the Italian manager.

And Varane seems to have had enough, wanting to push a move through to reunite himself with former Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

This move would guarantee him more playing time as Chelsea are in desperate need of a centre back, with Brazilian David Luiz leaving for PSG in a world record deal for a defender.

Feasibility of a transfer

The center-back’s price tag will be considerably large as well, having grown in value and in popularity over the last few years, especially after some of the heroic performances he put in at this World Cup.

Having a great reputation and one of the best managers in the game chasing after him, it seems Varane might be on his way out of the Bernabeu after all.
