Manchester United and Chelsea have both had their attention drawn to the announcement that Edison Cavani wants a move to the Premier League and has asked his agent to try and find a possible new club, according to The Daily Star.
The PSG striker has only been in Paris for a year after moving from Italian side Napoli last summer in a deal in the region of £55 million on a five year deal. Despite having a successful first season with the reign champions of France, Cavani is not pleased at the way the club use him. He is often played out of his desired position, as the main striker, forced to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic meaning playing in a wider position as a supporting striker.
The most expensive signing in French football performed well last season, scoring both goals in the Coupe de la Ligue final which PSG won as well as scoring 25 goals, 16 of them coming in the league. This meant he finished joint second with Gignac, Aboubakar, Ben Yedder and Kalou with only Ibrahimovic scoring more goals.
The Uruguay international featured during all four of Uruguay’s World Cup games in Brazil but failed to dazzle throughout the tournament. He managed to score his only goal of the tournament in their first game against Costa Rica, netting from the penalty spot, before going on to lose 3-1 in a surprise result. Cavani also provided the assist for Luis Suarez to score the first goal against England, playing a great cross in between the English defence leaving Suarez with an easy headed finish.
Despite both Manchester United and Chelsea being interested in the Uruguayan international, it is not clear how much the transfer would cost either of the clubs. If PSG were looking to make as much of the £55 million back from the transfer, both Premier League clubs might decide not to bid for the striker as they have other options.
Chelsea recently confirmed the signing of Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, so no longer crave a big name striker to lead their line-up. At Manchester United, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney would not feel happy about becoming second string strikers to Cavani. With Louis van Gaal expected to get the best out of van Persie, adding another striker into the squad may not be the best start to the Dutch manager’s reign at Old Trafford.
