Arsenal star Lukas Podolski appeared to confirm yesterday that he is indeed leaving the club in a surprise move, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
The publication says that the German international, who has largely struggled to secure himself a first-team place at the Emirates Stadium since his arrival from Cologne in 2012, tweeted yesterday: “Road to Sevilla FC”, prompting strong speculation that he could be on his way to the La Liga outfit.
The tweet was quickly taken down, but not prior to it being screen-grabbed and shared around the web, meaning Podolski’s secret may be out.
The 29-year-old’s future in north London is looking increasingly bleak following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, and the likes of Theo Walcott - when fit -, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mesut Ozil will all conspire to keep him out of the starting XI. As such a move might be what’s needed if Podolski is to guarantee himself regular game-time next term, particularly as he enters the twilight years of his career.
The winger, who has been capped an impressive 116 times by his national side, was part of Joachim Low's squad which won the World Cup in Brazil, and has also been linked with a switch back to the Bundesliga. Having already played for Bayern Munich and Cologne - the latter in two separate stints - he is more than familiar with the league, and many would expect him to go down that route if he was to leave Arsenal.
However Mundo Deportivo claims that Podolski’s tweet is an indication that he is on the verge of securing a move to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, and that he could hook up with the likes of Piotr Trochowski in Seville.
Having achieved F.A Cup success last season Wenger is now desperate to return to the times when Arsenal were the dominant force in English football. The move for Sanchez was a clear showing of ambition from the Frenchman, but he faces big calls over the future of a number of players currently on his books.
