Manchester United have been made odds-on favourites to sign Mats Hummels in the transfer window.
SkyBet have slashed their odds on the German international making the move from Borussia Dortmund, with the Red Devils priced at 2/5 to land their man before September 2nd. Barcelona are next in the market at 10/1, whilst Chelsea (18/1), Real Madrid (25/1) and Bayern Munich (28/1) are also available at a bigger price.
The shortened odds comes in the wake of reports in Spain that new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has agreed a £16million deal for the player. If that is true, then it can only be described as great business by the Dutchman - especially given that Barca have also been linked with a move.
World Cup star
Hummels was one Germany’s stand-out performers at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, appearing six times and scoring twice. His nation only conceded twice - in a 2-2 draw with Ghana - when he was on the pitch.
His club record is also impressive, having joined Dortmund from Bayern Munich on a permanent deal in 2009. He’s spent his entire career in his homeland, won the Bundesliga twice and also reached a Champions League final.
In contrast, Manchester United have spent a season in decline following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, with David Moyes unable to deliver under the burden of expectation at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal's signings
His departure gave the Red Devils a chance to appoint a big name this summer, and Van Gaal has been tasked with making the former champions contenders once again in the Premier League. He’s wasted little time in making a statement in the transfer market.
Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw have already completed moves to Manchester United, and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has insisted that more money is available to the manager. That could mean Hummels is next.
The bookmakers clearly believe there is a chance it could happen, having quickly reacted to the growing expectation and excitement at Old Trafford.
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both leaving, there is no doubt that the club need a new centre back. Hummels would be the perfect fit, and whilst it seemed unlikely that such a move was possible just weeks ago, Manchester United may well get their man this time around.
