Marco Reus will stay at Borussia Dortmund for one more season, but will then push for a controversial transfer to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich, reports The Daily Express.
The 25-year-old is keen to join former teammates Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski at the Allianz Arena, but understands the Bavarian giants won't make a move until next summer. That may have something to do with the ankle injury that kept him out of the World Cup, but Pep Guardiola remains a big fan of the midfielder.
Premier League implications
Such news has big implications for both Manchester United and Liverpool, who were both rumoured to be considering moves for Reus. Both Louis van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers are looking for attacking reinforcements and Reus provides the dynamic play that could excel in the Premier League.
Rodgers was looking to make a marquee signing following the sale of Luis Suarez. Alongside target Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba, the Liverpool boss was reportedly preparing a £30 million move for Reus.
As Van Gaal has just as much cash in the coffers as his Anfield counterpart, it was expected Manchester United would match such an offer. However, it appears their attempts will be fruitless as Bayern have already won the race.
It is not the news Borussia Dortmund fans wanted to hear. They have seen some of their biggest stars make their way south to the Allianz Arena in each of the last two seasons. Bayern officials later promised that their days of poaching Dortmund's players were over, but it appears they will make an exception for Reus.
There is no surprise in that; Reus was imperious for Dortmund last season. In 30 Bundesliga games, he scored 16 goals and assisted a further 13 from a wide position.
It was that form that was starting to excite both Manchester United and Liverpool fans. But it appears that Bayern Munich was always the desired destination.
Bayern will not make a move for the player this summer and would like to see him sufficiently recover from ankle ligament damage before committing to a fee. The same report says a deal next summer is likely to be in the region of £28 million.
Barcelona were also rumoured to be interested in the player, but were put off when the player sustained his ankle injury. They went on to sign Luis Suarez for £75 million and are now believed to be prioritising the signing of a defender to replace Carles Puyol.
