Louis van Gaal era begins
Manchester United begin the Louis van Gaal era with an encounter against LA Galaxy on Thursday, and the former Netherlands coach is likely to give debuts to his two significant summer signings, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw.
Van Gaal set about beginning work with his new club immediately after leading the Netherlands to a third place finish at the World Cup, and the pre-season tour of the USA starts with a meeting against MLS opposition at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Manchester United initially took 25 players to the States, a number increased to 26 following Javier Hernandez’s scheduled late arrival, while Shaw and Herrera are the two who will be under the greatest scrutiny for the watching public.
New signings ready for action
While predicting a side for a friendly match is something of a thankless task, it would seem rather likely that both Shaw and Herrera will be included from the off by Van Gaal, although the XI will not provide a great indication of things to come.
Given that Shaw is the only ‘senior’ left-back available to Van Gaal his inclusion is something of a must, while Herrera’s omission from Spain’s World Cup squad means he could do with the minutes under his belt.
New look defence
Another Spaniard likely to be named in the starting XI is David de Gea who, despite being injured while on World Cup duty, has been back in training during this Manchester United tour and has, of course, been the undoubted No.1 goalkeeper.
Aside from Shaw, the defence is a little more tricky to predict. Rafael has had the summer off and is the only out-and-out right-back, and his attacking instincts will appeal to his new manager. The Brazilian, then, should start.
Jonny Evans should feature in the centre, he too in much need of some game time, while it is a toss up between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as to who gets the nod to partner the Northern Ireland international.
With Michael Carrick a long-term injury absentee and Marouane Fellaini still on holiday, Darren Fletcher will be the most adept anchor midfielder in this squad. The experienced Scot should allow Herrera the freedom he requires in the middle of the park.
Ahead of these two, Van Gaal could select numerous four-man combinations, with a variety of experience and youth at his disposal. We fancy Juan Mata will get the nod, while Wilfried Zaha and Danny Welbeck can provide the pace and incision.
Up front is Wayne Rooney, who could potentially skipper if he starts, although Van Gaal may choose to go with youth to begin with, which would mean Jesse Lingard or Will Keane, or perhaps even Welbeck leading the line.
