Lukas Podolski is looking to use his close relationship with Sami Khedira to try and engineer a scenario wherein the German international snubs Chelsea in favour of a move to the Emirates Stadium, according to reports.
The Daily Express, citing German publication Bild, carries quotes from the Arsenal playmaker which confirm that he wants to see Khedira join him in north London, despite the fact that Podolski openly states that he does not need to go out of his way to convince the Real Madrid star which club to opt for.
The defensive midfielder has been strongly linked with a transfer to the Premier League in recent months, and Arsene Wenger is amongst those harbouring hopes of winning his signature before the start of next season.
Now, likely much to his manager’s pleasure, Podolski has weighed in on the saga, and is urging Khedira to make a proposed switch to the Gunners.
“I didn't have to [try to convince Khedira to join Arsenal]," he is said to have told Bild.
“Sami knows how much fun he could have with me, Mesut [Ozil] and Per [Mertesacker] at Arsenal.
"We had a great time together at the World Cup and I would like it very much if he comes to London."
Though Podolski’s words will have little effect on Khedira’s eventual decision, the relationship mentioned could be an overriding factor. Arsenal have three German internationals in their squad to Chelsea’s one (Andre Schurrle), and the presence of such characters would no doubt ease Khedira's integration to the Premier League.
That being said it will take an effort better than their previous ones if Madrid are to consider selling their midfield anchor to Wenger. Numerous talks are reported to have been held in recent weeks, with Khedira said to be holding out for a colossal contract before he says yes. His stance though may well have changed thanks to transfer activity in the last few days.
Following the high-profile purchases of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, many expect Madrid to hold a clearance sale in the coming weeks in order to pay for their huge outlay. Both Khedira and Angel di Maria have their heads firmly placed on the chopping block due to their reputations as world-class players, and it looks as though it will only be a matter of time before their talents are snapped up by another European superpower.
One such superpower could indeed be Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho said to be interested in reuniting himself with Khedira, who is available for €29million, having previously worked with him at Madrid. The 27-year-old could form a solid partnership with Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park, and his experience would no doubt offer the Blues plenty in their bid to win back the Premier League crown.
