Liverpool have renewed their interest in signing Chelsea full-back Ryan Bertrand this summer, according to The Daily Mail.
The report has suggested, however, that the Blues would be reluctant to let the player depart to a team they consider to be title rivals. And, considering the Reds ended above Jose Mourinho's side last term, it remains to be seen as to whether the Blues will enter negotiations with the Merseyside outfit over the player, who has also been linked with a move to Tottenham.
Bertrand has been on Liverpool's radar for some time now, with the club having been credited with interest in the player last summer, while the report has suggested that the club came close to landing him back in the January transfer window.
The same report has also suggested that Bertrand, who spent time on loan at Premier League outfit Aston Villa last season, has been rated in the region of £8 million by his club. The Reds certainly seem intent on improving their back-line ahead of next month's big kick-off.
Bertrand now appears to be the man Rodgers wants to bring to Anfield, however, after the club failed to land Ben Davies, who completed a move to Tottenham yesterday. The report from The Mail also suggested that Liverpool were put off signing Alberto Moreno because of the player's £16m valuation.
Bertrand may well be on the lookout for a permanent transfer away from Stamford Bridge, having struggled to make an impact at the club in recent time. While he failed to impress Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, a move to Liverpool may well appeal to him, with the Reds set to embark upon a Champions League campaign.
Despite Chelsea's sale of veteran Ashley Cole, it appears that Bertrand would still struggle for opportunities at the Bridge next term after the club landed Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid this summer. Mourinho also has Spanish ace Cesar Azpilicueta, who starred in the left-back role last season, on his books as the club look to overhaul Manchester City in the race for the league title in 2014/15.
