Newcastle’s new signing Emmanuel Riviere has expressed his delight to have worked with Columbian Real Madrid man James Rodriguez stating ‘he is one of the best players the world’, according to Sky Sports.

Riviere used to play with Rodriguez at AS Monaco before both stars left for Newcastle and Real Madrid respectively, and the Magpies new signing had nothing but praise for his former team mate.

Riviere respect

“It was a great experience for me to play alongside a player like that," he said.

“It was very nice to play with him because he is a brilliant No 10 - his passing is good and he is always looking to switch play.

“He is one of the best players in the world and I learnt a lot from him and developed a great deal.

“But now I have gone to expand my career with my new team and I want to work hard to improve.”

Newcastle ambitions

And Riviere, who signed for his new club on a long-term contract last week, will want to begin life in the Premier League with a flying start, taking his great Monaco form with him - he netted 13 goals in 36 games for the Ligue 1 side alongside Rodriguez - to St James’ Park.

The French player can't wait to get playing and wants emulate his hero Thierry Henry and become a Premier League great.

“Thierry is my hero. He is from the French West Indies, like me, I used to watch him all the time.

“There are aspects of my game that are a bit like his. I am a striker who is fast and strong and I can score goals – and I think my characteristics are good for the Premier League."

These aspects of his game will serve him well, although he will have to adapt to the fast pace of the English top flight, but it seems that he is enjoying his time at Newcastle already.

“I feel like I have settled in well with Newcastle and I feel like I know everybody already.

“I really enjoyed my first game and it was a fantastic start for me - but the hard work really starts now.”
