Justin Blackmon could have been quite a successful NFL player. He has everything you want from a number one receiver. Great hands, great size, and speed after the catch.
Blackmon showed his raw potential and quality that could have made him an NFL superstar during his rookie season. In November, 2012, Blackmon gained 236 yards against the Houston Texans in a game that should have propelled him forward towards great things in his career.
The Jacksonville Jaguars wideout achieved this feat at the tender age of 22. This achievement was equalled and surpassed by Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon last season, as he made over 200 yards in a game not once, but twice. This is at the point that the comparisons between Gordon and Blackmon become eerily similar.
Not only were they both 22 when they achieved over 200 yards in a single NFL game, they both play for teams that drafted a rookie quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft. But of course that's not where the comparisons stop. Both players have failed NFL drug tests by testing positive for marijuana before. Josh Gordon may still have time to rescue his career, but Justin Blackmon looks certain to be throwing his all away as we speak.
Blackmon arrested again
On Thursday, Justin Blackmon was arrested for the third time for marijuana possession. The worst thing about this is the fact that he is currently suspended indefinitely from the NFL anyway, with this latest incident bound to reflect unkindly on any official decision by commissioner Roger Goodell with regard to the length of Blackmon's ban.
Not only that, Justin Blackmon has failed multiple drug tests during his NFL career, which means he is now becoming a perennial marijuana abuser in the class of Ricky Williams. The former Miami Dolphins running-back had his troubles with weed, and eventually he decided to retire from the Dolphins in a marijuana haze after failing multiple drug tests. He came back and played several seasons for the Dolphins again before a solitary season at the Baltimore Ravens, but by then his talents had already been lost to the NFL.
Lost to the NFL
It seems more and more likely that Justin Blackmon's talents have also been lost to the NFL. It's as if the wideout cannot help himself anymore. His actions portray a man that has already given up and not a man that is showing remorse or a desire to get better. Blackmon went to rehab in November 2013 but it hasn't seemed to help. Hopefully the talented 24-year-old isn't on a endless spiral down to oblivion, but it's looking more and more like that to be honest.
