Liverpool are in talks with Benfica over a deal to bring Argentine winger Nicolas Gaitan to Anfield, reports The Metro.
The report has suggested that the Reds are desperate to land the 26-year-old, who has a release clause of £35.6million in his current contract with the Portuguese outfit.
Big spending Liverpool
It certainly appears that Liverpool are ready to break the bank to sign a top player in this window after Brendan Rodgers insisted that he would spend big for the right name. However, with Gaitan's release clause currently at £35.6million, it appears that the Reds believe they can land him for around £30m this summer.
The player, who was named in the Europa League Team of the Year in 2013/14, has excelled in recent time, and is approaching the prime of his career. He'd certainly prove a major coup for Rodgers, and would represent a marquee signing for the club following the exit of Luis Suarez to Barcelona earlier on in this window, however it remains to be seen as to whether the Reds can agree a deal with his current club.
If Liverpool are going to land the Argentine star, then they may still have to battle a number of elite clubs from around Europe for his signature. The same report from the Metro has suggested that Liverpool's Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United are interested in the star, while European clubs Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Monaco have all been credited with interest in him of late.
It's uncertain as to whether the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea swoop in for the player in the near future, but it certainly appears that Liverpool are ahead of their rivals in pursuit of the talented winger.
Who needs him?
It's no surprise that Liverpool have pressed ahead with a move for the highly rated Benfica man. With the Reds set to embark upon a Champions League challenge next season, Rodgers will be desperate to have a number of top names at his disposal for the up coming season.
Manchester United, on the other hand, will be without European football next term, so may not want to add too many players to their squad in this window. Chelsea, much like Liverpool, will be involved in Europe's top competition, but it seems unlikely that Jose Mourinho will add many more big names to his side after the signings of Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Co.
