Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is considering moves for as many as three defenders, with Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, Borussia Dortmund's World Cup winning star Mats Hummels and Feyenoord's Stefan De Vrij all on the agenda.
This has been reported by The Express, who have suggested that the new Manchester United boss is ready to improve his defensive options as he implements a back-three at Old Trafford.
It appears, then, that the new Red Devils chief wants to improve his side's options in defence after he used a back-three in his first pre-season game in charge of the Red Devils. Against the LA Galaxy, United ran out 7-0 winners as Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans started in the defence.
Experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both departed the Theatre of Dreams at the end of last season, meaning the trio of Jones, Smalling and Evans are now United's only real first-team centre-half regulars.
It appears that Van Gaal is ready to step up his interest in the likes of Vermaelen and Co. The Arsenal captain, who has been rated at £12 million by the report, has struggled for opportunities in north London in recent time, as the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have taken his place in the side.
However, with United looking for an experienced head in defence, Vermaelen could act as a fine signing for the new Red Devils boss. However, as the Express suggests that Barcelona are also interested in the Belgian star, it remains to be seen as to whether United will get their man in this transfer window.
Hummels & De Vrij
And, it appears that Van Gaal could also try and bring Hummels and De Vrij to Old Trafford in the near future. The same report has suggested that United haven't been put off signing Hummels, despite his manager Jurgen Klopp rejecting the rumour.
Van Gaal may, however, feel more confident in his pursuit of De Vrij, who starred under Van Gaal for the Dutch national team at this summer's World Cup in Brazil. The 22-year-old impressed this summer, and looks set for an extremely bright future in the game.
The report has rated the pair at a a combined fee of £25m, meaning Van Gaal could land all three stars for around £37m this summer.
