It may have only been a pre-season friendly, but new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal got off to a dream start as the Red Devils crushed LA Galaxy 7-0 this past week. However, the Dutch boss will embark upon a tougher challenge when his side take on Italian outfit AS Roma tomorrow in Denver.
Rudi Garcia's side enjoyed a fine campaign in 2013/14, finishing only behind eventual champions Juventus in Serie A. The Italian side, unlike Manchester United, will be plying their trade in Europe's elite competition next term, so the Red Devils players will be looking to prove a point against their opposition.
United will certainly be excited ahead of the game, but the team will do well to repeat a similar scoreline from the Galaxy clash. United fans will, however, fondly remember the club's 7-1 triumph over the Italian outfit way back in 2007.
Goalkeepers: De Gea, Lindegaard, Amos, Johnstone
Defenders: Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Jones, Shaw, Blackett, M Keane, James
Midfielders: Herrera, Cleverley, Fletcher, Young, Zaha, Kagawa, Mata, Valencia, Nani
Forwards: Lingard, Welbeck, Rooney, W Keane, Hernandez
Van Gaal may well make some changes following his side's huge win over the Galaxy a couple of days previous. It's expected, though, that the new United boss will stick with a similar back-line, with United set to adopt the 3-5-2 formation once again.
Spanish 'keeper David de Gea should start in goal, with English duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling set to partner Jonny Evans in the back-three for the second consecutive game. Despite Reece James' fine performance in the second half against the Galaxy, Luke Shaw should be handed a starting role, but Brazilian full-back Rafael da Silva could replace Antonio Valencia on the right-hand side.
Ander Herrera, who played the full 90 minutes last time out, may well start again, but it's unlikely he will play the full game. Darren Fletcher, meanwhile, who was the club's captain against the Galaxy could drop to the bench, with Tom Cleverley potentially coming in for him.
Wayne Rooney looks set to keep his place in United's forward line, with Danny Welbeck being replaced by Mexican star Javier Hernandez, who only joined up with the squad just before the Galaxy clash. And Japanese playmaker Shinji Kagawa may be given an opportunity in his favoured position of just behind the striker, with Juan Mata dropping to the bench.
It's expected, though, that Van Gaal will make a number of changes at half-time, with a very different United team taking to the pitch in the second-half. The likes of James, Lingard, Zaha and Co. will all be hoping for an opportunity to impress Van Gaal.
