Louis van Gaal has told Manchester United that he requires five more players before the transfer window closes on September 2 - but they will cost a combined £100 million.
According to The Sun, Van Gaal wants Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria, Ajax left-back Daley Blind plus centre-backs Thomas Vermaelen, Mats Hummels and Stefan De Vrij - from Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord, respectively.
Van Gaal not happy with current squad
Despite recording impressive victories in their first two pre-season fixtures - against LA Galaxy and AS Roma - it seems Manchester United are not in a strong enough position to rival the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City for the 2014/15 Premier League title, according to Van Gaal.
United, who finished last season’s Premier League campaign in seventh place, have already spent close to £60 million this summer on the acquisitions of central midfielder Ander Herrera and left-back Luke Shaw.
However, Van Gaal - who was not happy with United’s 3-2 win over Roma on Saturday night - believes it’s imperative that the club’s owners allow him to spend big on further reinforcements.

Blind is the next most-expensive on the list. The 24-year-old Netherlands international will command a transfer fee of around £17 million.
Hummels, who could be the toughest of the quintet to purchase, could cost around £16 million, while Vermaelen and De Vrij would set the Red Devils back £10 million each.
