Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is ready to push through a deal to sign Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen, according to Goal.com.

The report has suggested that United are confident of landing the Belgian defender, despite having been knocked back by Arsenal after initial enquiries, and having to battle La Liga giants Barcelona for the player's services.

Out of favour

The same report has indicated that the Gunners ace wants a move out of north London in this window after falling out of favour at the Emirates. Vermaelen has struggled for opportunities in recent time, having lost his place in the side to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

It remains to be seen, however, as to whether the Arsenal captain would rather a move to Old Trafford or the Nou Camp in this window. United certainly appear to be confident of landing the Arsenal man, despite interest from the Catalan giants.

It has certainly been a tricky year or so for Vermaelen, but there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel for the Gunners skipper who has just 12-months remaining on his current Arsenal contract.

United defence

Manchester United fans will certainly be hoping the club tie up a deal to land the defender, with the Old Trafford outfit currently having a lack of options in the centre of defence. After the departures of experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Van Gaal only really has three first-team defenders at the club.

The Dutch coach, who has installed a 3-5-2 formation at the club, has the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans at his disposal. The Red Devils boss could do with adding experience to his back-line, meaning Vermaelen would prove an ideal solution for the United chief. If the centre-half, who can also play at left-back, moves to Old Trafford, then he will be the second Arsenal captain to leave the club for United in the space of two years following the transfer of Robin van Persie.

The Belgian centre-half could play a key role under Van Gaal, as he could help improve the likes of Jones and Smalling. The possibility of first-team football at Old Trafford will surely appeal to the defender, but United will now have to secure a deal with Arsenal for the player's services.
