Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has already told Nani to find another club this summer, and will include the Portuguese playmaker in his pre-season cull of the first-team squad.
According to information in French newspaper Le 10 Sport, which also coincidentally plays up idea of Nani moving to Premier League rivals Arsenal, the Dutchman doesn’t have Nani in his plans for the team moving forward and is keen to do what his predecessor wasn’t able to and sell him on. It was claimed back in January that David Moyes was ready to get rid of the winger, though a lengthy injury put paid to that notion meaning that he was given one last chance to prove himself.
Now though it would appear that Van Gaal has all but sealed his fate.
Nani at United
Though initially tipped to become the natural heir to compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford, Nani has never really looked close to realising the potential he promised. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Sporting Lisbon in 2007 the 27-year-old has often showed glimpses of his ability to torment opposition defences but a question mark has always hovered above his consistency.
In recent transfer windows the idea of him leaving has become an increasingly feasible concept, with many believing that the time for him to prove himself worthy has long since passed. Though Moyes was the manager most expected to wield the axe the responsibility now falls to Van Gaal, and you can bet your bottom dollar that the Dutchman will have no reservations about upsetting anyone by doing so.
Van Gaal’s plans
The 62-year-old arrives in Manchester with a reputation for doing things his way and, though he has made it clear he will assess all members of the first-team squad before making decisions on their futures, there’s every reason to believe that four or five could be shipped before next season. Last term the Red Devils were famously below-par, and the general consensus is that it will take a serious squad overhaul to bring them up to speed with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
As such Van Gaal is looking to a number of top European stars in the hope that United’s weak areas can be solidified by exciting transfer targets. Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera have already been bought in, but the likes of Arturo Vidal, Kevin Strootman, Thomas Vermaelen, Edinson Cavani and Juan Cuadrado are all individuals of interest.
The latter is particularly significant with regards to Nani’s future, as his arrival would surely make the wide-man surplus to requirements.
