Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is open to receiving offers for Shinji Kagawa, and will look to sell the Japanese playmaker this summer as he reshapes his first-team squad.
According to the Manchester Evening News Kagawa finds himself one of the names in Van Gaal’s head when it comes to who he wants to get rid of, and the Dutchman is keen to reduce the amount of players on his books as he wants to make purchases of his own. The future of the midfielder has been open to interpretation for some time now, and reports are suggesting that if an offer comes in then it will be accepted.
Van Gaal's plans
Van Gaal has big plans for his United team moving forward, and still wants to negotiate deals for Thomas Vermaelen, Daley Blind, Mats Hummels and Angel di Maria. However to do that he needs to sell players in order to make room, and Kagawa is seen as nothing more than a fringe player.
Of course he’s not alone, and the likes of Nani, Ashley Young and Tom Cleverley are all also facing uncertain futures. Regardless of that though it’s perhaps Kagawa who would command the highest sum, and it stands to reason that a number of European teams would be interested in his services.
Borussia Dortmund in particular are said to be intrigued by the idea of being reunited with their former playmaker, and Jurgen Klopp is desperate now to entice star names to the club in the wake of a string of high-profile departures. Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski have both left in the past two summer transfer windows - including this one - and Marco Reus may well be moving on should a sizeable offer come in.
More game-time for Kagawa
Kagawa himself is no doubt keen to get himself more game-time for next season, having seen his talents largely wasted in recent years at Old Trafford. Despite having been tipped for a bright future when first signed by Sir Alex Ferguson he was routinely used as a substitute by the Scotsman, and enjoyed even less opportunities under David Moyes.
And now, although it was thought he might be handed a lifeline under Van Gaal, his United nightmare could be ended, so long as a suitable fee is received by the club. The 62-year-old has a surplus of attacking options at his disposal and, with the likes of Juan Mata and darling boy Adnan Januzaj for company, Kagawa appears destined to struggle.
