Arsenal are seriously interested in signing Shakhtar Donetsk star Douglas Costa as the Brazilian seeks to escape unrest in Ukraine, reports Metro.
If a deal can be agreed for Costa, Arsene Wenger will allow Joel Campbell to leave on loan for another season with AC Milan keen to take him to the San Siro.
Shakhtar Donetsk are facing somewhat of a crisis after a number of their foreign stars refused to return to the club because of the current crisis. Many, including Costa, are now trying desperately to seal moves away from Ukraine in either a temporary or permanent deal.
The club are staying defiant, threatening legal action if the player refuses to return, but Metro, quoting Sky Italia reported Gianluca Di Marzio, say Arsenal are in front of the queue.
Premier League interest
Signing the attacking midfielder would be quite a coup for Wenger. The 23-year-old is thought to be drawing interest from Manchester United as well with Louis van Gaal sensing the opportunity for a bargain.
Costa is valued at £20 million by Shakhtar but with the player keen to force a move there is a belief that a significantly smaller offer could be negotiated. Big prices won' scare the Old Trafford boss, who has plenty of resources available to him, but a deal for Costa is one that could be done quickly and it is Arsenal who seem to have taken advantage of this.
Tottenham also remain interested in the player, but it appears Mauricio Pochettino's priorities lie with completing a deal for Southampton duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez. Both are expected to join in the coming days to follow Calum Chambers, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren out of the St Mary's exit door.
Implications for Joel Campbell
If Wenger does manage to sign Costa, it means Campbell will face another season away from the club. Campbell has spent time at Lorient, Real Betis and Olympiakos since joining the Gunners in 2011 and it was thought he would be given the chance to impress at the Emirates this season.
However, interest in the player is high after several high profile performances at the World Cup and Arsenal are keen to see the player continue his development. AC Milan are thought to want a permanent deal for Campbell but will agree to a loan deal if the fee is small enough.
Campbell is currently on a pre-season training camp with Arsenal and could still convince Wenger that Costa is an unnecessary addition. If Campbell can offer something new to the Arsenal team it is feasible that Wenger will retract his interest in the Brazilian.
