Aston Villa are determined to retain the services of Ron Vlaar after his sensational World Cup showing, but at the same time know they will be forced to sell should Manchester United submit a formal offer.
According to the Daily Mirror Villa chiefs have come to terms with the fact that they are going to lose their Dutch centre-back should Louis van Gaal make the decision that he wants him, with certain sources claiming that particular outcome to easily come to fruition. Vlaar was tremendous at the back for the Netherlands during the tournament in Brazil this summer, and his performances have reportedly caught the eye of the man who served as his coach.
And now, with Van Gaal looking to bolster a back line weakened by the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, the United boss could well make a move for Vlaar as he looks to implement a 3-4-3 system. The 29-year-old is familiar enough with the set up from his time with the national side, and his experience is much-needed at Old Trafford, regardless of the fact there would be cause for concern were he handed a starting berth.
As has been proven in the past side’s rarely benefit from buying players based on their performances at a major international tournament, and Vlaar’s shaky record for Villa since his introduction to Premier League football in 2012 leaves plenty to be desired.
It’s fairly easy to quantify the claim that he’s not in the same bracket as the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels - Van Gaal’s other supposed targets - and many United fans will no doubt be hoping that their new manager can entice the more illustrious names he’s been linked with, before turning his attentions to those deemed to be of lesser ability.
Along with moves for Hummels and Vermaelen United are apparently also looking into deals for Arturo Vidal, Kevin Strootman and Angel di Maria, as Van Gaal looks to ensure that his team can compete for major honours next term. So far he has promised to assess the strength of the individuals on his books before decided to potentially flog any of them, but it’s with a degree of certainty that it can be predicted a number of players will be leaving.
Regardless of that though one of the most pressing matters for him will now be forming a defence capable of shutting opposition teams out on a regular basis. The trio of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans have all been back-up options in the past, and Van Gaal will almost certainly be looking to add pedigree to the equation.
