UFC President Dana White sat down and appeared on ESPN's SportsCenter to officially announce the news that Anderson Silva will be returning to the octagon, shortly after the news was leaked on Twitter by SportsCenter anchor Max Bretos.
White proudly announced the confirmation that former UCF middleweight champion Anderson 'The Spider' Silva would be finally returning from his injury and his first taste of action would be against former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz on January 31.
Both fighters are returning from long layoffs but the bout between with the two has been discussed for almost two years, the rumours began surfacing as early as 2012 that Silva and Diaz would be destined to meet in the octagon at some point.
Silva's manager Ed Soares ignited the rumours when he was holding out on a middleweight title fight with Chris Weidman, since then the clamours for the contest have only grown louder and the President White officially set the date of January 31st for the long awaited battle.
Silva is now 39-years old and many are interested to see how the former champion recovers from such a catastrophic injury, his recovery and resurgence will certainly be one of the biggest stories surrounding this particular fight.
Diaz on the other hand last fought in March 2013, there were even speculations that retirement was a serious possibility for the former MMA fighter but his name continues to be mentioned about fights with the likes of Carlos Condit and Hector Lombard.
This also marks the first announcement regarding a UFC event on Jan. 31, 2015. UFC 182 is already scheduled for Jan. 3, 2015, so given the scope of the fight, this likely serves as the unofficial announcement of UFC 183.
Details for the fight continue to filter through and everyone will surely be interested in the eventual return of one of the greatest fighters the sport has seen, Anderson Silva.
