Manchester United finally look like they have missed out on summer target Angel di Maria as reports in Spain claim a deal has been agreed and he will be unveiled soon.
According to AS, a contract worth in the region of €9million has been agreed upon in principle for the Real Madrid winger. This, along with the guarantee of Champions League football next season, has convinced Di Maria to snub Manchester United and the French club are set to present him as a new signing on Monday.
Man Utd interest
New Old Trafford manager Louis van Gaal was heavily linked with a swoop for the Argentina international this summer, as the new formation he is bringing to the club requires specialist wingers.
However, Manchester United will have to look elsewhere if the latest reports are accurate, which leaves the Dutch coach with a dilemma regarding summer business.
Antonio Valencia looks set to stay after signing a new five-year deal in June, but the futures of both Ashley Young and Nani look bleak as neither have been at their best for much of the past two years and Van Gaal is expected to make major changes at the club.
AS also report that Bayern Munich tried to make a late move for Di Maria, but that it came too late because Real Madrid and PSG had already come to an agreement over the player in the region of €70million, with a possible €5million of add-ons.
Sums don't add up
Such large sums are baffling as the Ligue 1 champions were recently restricted to a €60million net transfer spend this summer as part of a punishment for breaching UEFA FFP rules and they have already purchased David Luiz from Chelsea for close to that amount.
The report suggests that both Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani will be sold to fund the deal for Di Maria, but the Qatari-owned club could struggle to demand the requisite fees with possible suitors aware they need to sell.
Real Madrid’s selling of Di Maria is baffling in itself as he was one of their standout players in the second half of last season, putting in a crucial man of the match display in the Champions League final against city rivals Atletico Madrid that saw los Blancos win the famed ‘La Decima’.
Santiago Bernabeu president Florentino Perez craves a ‘Galactico’ signing every season and this year it was World Cup superstar James Rodriguez. The Colombia playmaker was purchased from AS Monaco in a deal worth in the region of €80million and so sales are necessary to balance the books.
