The Sufferfest set to revolutionise indoor running

The Sufferfest have announced that they will be launching training videos for runners on Thursday, 31st July.

After online success with their ‘high-intensity/low volume’ training philosophy for cycling and triathlon, the company have turned their attention to running in a bid to capitalise on a whole new market.

Real racing footage

With videos featuring professional racing footage, engaging storylines and structured workouts designed by elite coaches, it’s easy to see the appeal for a cyclist or triathlete looking to get even more out of themselves. The same principle applies with running, and understandably The Sufferfest are excited with what is to come.

"We think that running has great potential as a market for us because there is huge participation around the world. A lot of people take up running to stay fit and then get bitten by the bug and want to take it further to get the best out of themselves. We offer that to people,” Kate Patterson, Senior Minister for Communications, told GiveMeSport.

“Like our cycling videos, we expect that the Sufferfest for runners will appeal to everyone from the first-timer to the more serious and even elite athletes. Suffering is all relative after all; anyone can find that space where they really push themselves to the max, and feel that sense of pride and wanting to come back for more."

Top level partnerships

Part of the charm of The Sufferfest is their use of professional racing footage. Through their partnerships with the likes of IMG, the UCI and the ASO, the company can pair top-level coaching with real footage from the most competitive events on the planet - the Tour de France and Diamond League being just two examples.

You can go up Alpe d’Huez alongside some of the climbing greats - and now you can test yourself on the track alongside gold medalists and world record holders.

“Our relationships give us unparalleled access to footage that can really benefit and inspire riders and runners. You push yourself as hard as you can if you know you’re keeping pace with a sporting legend,” added Patterson.

World class coaches

Some of the finest coaches on the planet are involved in The Sufferfest, including Neal Henderson of APEX, based in Colorado, and Ian Field from Dig Deep in the UK. Field recently brought the experience of being a three-time national Cyclocross champion to ”Half is Easy”, the latest cycling video from The Sufferfest which features no less than 40 all-out sprint efforts.

Users can purchase just a single video or a whole training plan to optimise output over a 10-week period, but both come with the knowledge that it’s been put together by someone at the top of that particular game.

“We’re talking about top level coaches who are experts in the 'high-intensity/low volume' training approach, and we have some great partnerships with these people that can really benefit anyone who uses the videos or training programmes which they have designed,” Patterson continues.

“It’s an opportunity to follow the training plan that gets implemented at the highest level."

It's not easy!

As the company name suggests, this isn’t going to be an easy workout. Running videos, which are available to purchase on the Sufferfest website from Thursday, last anywhere between 30 and 45 minutes and are designed to push you close to the limit.

These new running videos cover a variety of different interval training styles, including hill-climbing and pure speed.

"It’s important to get the very best out of the time that you spend either on your bike or running. People don’t always have hours to dedicate to it, particularly during the week, and these training videos have been designed to get the absolute maximum out of users. You could even do it in your lunch break,” Patterson tells us with a laugh, perhaps speaking from the experience of a few post-Sufferfest afternoons.

There is no doubting the credibility of the opportunities on offer to people who get involved with Sufferfest, and their growth on social media suggests the product is well received by those that use it. Over 117,000 people ‘like' them on Facebook, and it’s a passionate following who interact and become involved.

Getting involved

That’s helped by the creation of ‘Sufferlandria’, a mythological country where each user builds up their reputation by completing training videos and programmes. It’s a nice little extra for users which, given the competitive nature of the subjects, pushes people to do even more.

“Anyone who runs, cycles or takes part in triathlons has a competitive edge in them. This is just another way of doing that but in a fun environment. Who doesn’t want to become a Knight of Sufferlandria!”

You can’t argue with that.
