William Carvalho put up for sale

Sporting Lisbon have put Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho up for sale, reports The Metro.

The report has suggested that the defensive-midfielder, who has been valued at £35 million, could be on his way to Arsenal, with the north London outfit having already had one bid of around £24m rejected for the player's services.

Second bid?

However, it appears that the Emirates outfit, who will be targeting a Premier League title challenge in the 2014/15 campaign, could come back with a second offer for the midfielder, with his club ready to sell.

And it appears that the Gunners are in the driving seat to land the star, despite the same report suggesting that there's interest from their Premier League rivals Manchester United and La Liga giants Real Madrid. The report has suggested that Arsenal's willingness to pay off transfers in one sum has put them ahead of the likes of United and Co.

It remains to be seen as to whether Manchester United step up their interest in the player, with the club in need of midfield additions, but it appears that a second Arsenal bid is more likely this summer.

And, if Arsenal land the highly-rated midfielder, then they will posses an array of talent in the middle of the park ahead of the new season. The Gunners already have the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta in their ranks, but they seem intent on adding to the department further.

The signing of Carvalho, however, would give the club another option, as he could make his presence felt in the middle of the park. A strong, ball winning midfielder, Carvalho certainly looks set for a bright future, and he could excel in north London.

The Gunners have already splashed the cash in this transfer window, having secured the signatures of the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina. Arsenal fans will now be hoping the club reach the next level in the 2014/15 season after winning the FA Cup last term.
