Manchester United have moved a significant step closer to signing West Ham wonderkid Oscar Borg, whose style of play and impressive performances have led to comparisons with Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale.
The Daily Mail report that Borg, 16, has rejected a contract offer with West Ham and is keen to secure a dream move to Old Trafford.
What’s all the fuss about?
Borg is a left-sided winger, like former Tottenham ace Bale, who has emerged as the star player from West Ham’s famed youth academy.
However, as he has not been signed up as a scholar at Upton Park, Manchester United will be able to land the potential future superstar for just £250,000.
Borg has been on trial with Manchester United over the last couple of weeks and featured in a friendly match for the Red Devils’ Under-18 side earlier this month. He is also part of Manchester United’s Milk Cup squad and has started both of the team’s games over in Ireland so far.
Oscar Borg: Scout report
As this video shows, Borg possesses a sweet left-foot, and is capable of whipping in dangerous crosses from the left flank.
He is blessed with pace and power, like Bale, and isn’t afraid to have a shot from distance. Louis van Gaal - and his fellow Manchester United coaches - will be particularly impressed by the teenager’s ability to tackle.
Van Gaal likes to play with wing-backs, and Borg certainly appears to possess all of the required attributes to play at left wing-back for the Red Devils in the future.
Competition for Borg’s signature
The same report adds that Manchester United face stiff competition from other clubs for Borg’s signature, which is no surprise considering the player’s immense talent and potential.
It’s believed that Southampton are one of the clubs keen on Borg. The Saints, who have lost most of their key players this summer, may regard Borg as a potential long-term replacement for Luke Shaw, who now plies his trade for the Red Devils following a £27 million summer move.
And the lure of first-team football will inevitable cross Borg’s mind. Chances are likely to be limited for several years at Old Trafford, but he may be presented with more chances to shine elsewhere.
