New £16m Arsenal signing Calum Chambers was pictured wearing Thomas Vermaelen's number five training kit on the club's preseason tour - raising further doubts over the Belgian's future.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Chambers signed for the Gunners from Southampton earlier this week, and has been given the number 21 shirt for the upcoming season. But he was spotted wearing Vermaelen's gear on the club's tour of Austria, which sparked speculation on the social media site.

The 19-year-old linked up with his new Arsenal teammates straight after signing, and the pictures of Chambers in the number five kit have raised questions over Vermaelen's long-term future at the club.

Why Van Gaal wants Vermaelen

The Belgian international has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United. New United boss Louis Van Gaal wants a left-footed centre-back to play on the left hand side of his planned three-at-the-back 3-5-2 formation.

And Vermaelen, who is keen for first-team football after a frustrating season at the Emirates Stadium last year, is thought to be keen on the idea of an Old Trafford switch.

Vermaelen made just 14 Premier League appearances, just seven of which were starts, as Arsene Wenger kept faith with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

Barcelona interest

He remains the official club captain but is expected to leave before the close of the summer transfer window. As well as Manchester United, Spanish giants Barcelona have been tracking the defender. But at the Nou Camp, Vermaelen would find the same battle for a first-team spot.

United, without Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, would offer the easier route to first-team football although they are not competing in the Champions League.

Plan for Chambers

As for Chambers, the England under-19 international played all of his football for Southampton last season at right-back. He'll support Mathieu Debuchy, who was signed from Newcastle to replace Bacary Sagna.

But Wenger may have plans to convert Chambers to centre-back, a position he has played for England youth teams in the past. For the Southampton under-21 team, Chambers played central midfield.
