Poor Alex Song. When he left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2012 in a deal reportedly worth in the region of £15million he probably thought it would be the final stage of his journey to the top of European football.
His success at Arsenal was surprising to many because he looked far from a player that would one day become crucial to the Gunners team when Arsene Wenger snapped him up from France as a 17-year-old.
Patience paid off
The Arsenal’s manager’s patience, as it has done so often, paid off eventually, but Song’s position at the club eventually become uncomfortable and the Emirates Stadium club decided to cash in – again, making a major profit on the miniscule fee they purchased him for.
Song was always going to find it difficult to break into the first team at Camp Nou with names such as Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and Fabregas taking up much of the space in midfield and, apart from the odd deployment at centre-back, he never really took his chance.
Now reports are suggesting that the Catalan club are trying to get rid of Song after new manager Luis Enrique decided he was not a part of his rebuilding plans for next season. But the unfortunate thing for the Cameroon international is that Barcelona have not had any interest in his signature.
Hardly playing for two seasons, most likely on a significant wage and probably unwilling to step down too far, it’s understandable that the 26-year-old is struggling to find a new club for the coming season.
However, he is not alone in this predicament; there are a few high-profile names that need to find new clubs during the summer transfer window but will struggle to do so and we have picked out five of them.
