Iago Aspas has attempted to dissuade Liverpool target Alberto Moreno from joining Liverpool. The striker, who has joined Moreno at Sevilla believes that Liverpool will not be a welcoming place for the full-back, also claiming that he already prefers Sevilla to the Merseyside club.
The Spaniard will spend a season on loan in Seville, with an option to make the move permanent. And Aspas has urged his new team-mate to reject a move to Liverpool and stay in Spain.
His quote, translated from Spanish, says: “Alberto Moreno would never feel like he does in Seville at Liverpool. I’ve been here 3 4 days, now that I belong to Sevilla, I prefer he stays here.”
Aspas had a less than enjoyable first season at Anfield, and found first team opportunities rather limited.
In front of the Spaniard were two of the Premier League most potent strikers in the form of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. Very few managers would drop either striker, considering their impressive return.
This by no means however meant that Aspas wasn’t given his chance. Luis Suarez sat out Liverpool’s first six matches after biting Branislav Ivanovic, and both strikers suffered injuries throughout the course of the season.
Aspas made fourteen premier league appearances, but failed to find the back of the net once. His only strike for Liverpool came in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Oldham.
It is of little surprise then that Aspas was unable to endear himself to anyone at Anfield, and was subsequently farmed out on loan.
Is the deal dead?
Disregarding Aspas’ words, Moreno was believed to still hold an interest in moving to Anfield. However both clubs are at odds over the asking price. Sevilla won’t budge on their £20 million valuation of the player. Liverpool are unwilling to pay any more the £16 million.
Relations between the two clubs have been frosty since Liverpool poached Luis Alberto from them, who has subsequently been loaned out to Malaga.
It had been suggested that allowing Iago Aspas to move to Seville on loan was an attempt to butter up Sevilla and hope they will drop their valuation.
Liverpool’s inadequacies at left-back are well documented with Jon Flanagan required to fill the position on numerous occasions last season.
If Moreno truly is the only left-back for Rodgers, then the Ulsterman will have no choice but to fork out the £20 million Sevilla are demanding.
